Peter Brown Chaucer & the Making of Optical Space Paperback Book M9783039113408
The author links Chaucers writings with the medieval optical tradition in its various forms (scholastic texts, encyclopedias, exempla, vernacular poetry) both in general cultural terms and through the discussion of specific examples. He shows how the science of optics, or perspectiva, provides an account of spatial perception, including visual error, and demonstrates how these aspects of optical theory impact on Chaucers poetry. He provides detailed and sustained analysis of the spatial content of narratives across the range of Chaucers works, relating them to optical ideas and making use of Lefebvres theory of the production of space. The texts discussed include the Book of the Duchess, House of Fame, Knights Tale, Millers Tale, Reeves Tale, Merchants Tale, Squires Tale and Troilus and Criseyde. | Peter Brown Chaucer & the Making of Optical Space Paperback Book

Michael Sheehan The International Politics of Space Paperback Book M9780415399173
The year 2007 saw thefiftieth anniversary of the Space Age, which began with the launching of Sputnik by the Soviet Union in October 1957. Space is crucial to the politics of the postmodern world. It has seen competition and cooperation in the past fifty years, and is in danger of becoming a battlefield in the next fifty. The International Politics of Space is the first book to bring these crucial themes together and provide a clear and vital picture of how politically important space has become, and what its exploitation might mean for all our futures. Michael Sheehan analyzes the space programmes of the United States, Russia, China, India and the European Space Agency, and explains how central space has become to issues of war and peace, international law, justice and international development, and cooperation between the worlds leading states. It highlights the significance of China and Indias commitment to space, and explains how the theories and concepts we use to describe and explain space are fundamental to the possibility of avoiding conflict in space in the future. | Michael Sheehan The International Politics of Space Paperback Book

David John Space Weapons & Outer Space Arms Control Paperback Book M9783659341359
After the Chinese antisatellite test in 2007, the international community responded with fear that a new space race was soon to begin. Soon after the test, debate began on the need for an arms control treaty specifically for the use of banning weapons in outer space. The argument for an arms control treaty for outer space is not new however, as the debate began at the advent of the space race in the late 1950s. As no arms control treaty has been implemented in over 55 years it is clear that creating such a treaty for the space theatre is far more complicated than that of the sea, the land, or the air. This paper looks into why there has been a requirement for an arms control treaty for outer space, and analyses why creating such a treaty has been so difficult, arguing that a new approach is needed in the space debate. This paper also makes a number of suggestions for policy makers and scholars who are looking for ways to implement positive contributions towards the security of space, where traditional arms control techniques have failed. This paper will also suit students seeking a comprehensive work on the problems of arms control in outer space. | David John Space Weapons & Outer Space Arms Control Paperback Book
