When purchasing a projector, interested parties should inform themselves in advance about the relevant criteria such as brightness, contrast values, resolution, and noise level. Furthermore, it is important to clarify which technology is suitable.
DLP, LCD, and LED beamers
Currently, there are three different types in the projector / beamer category on the market: DLP, LCD, and LED. A DLP beamer offers high contrast and strong brightness, making it usable in well-lit rooms. Thanks to its high speed, it is also capable of displaying 3D content. It is also suitable for presentations. The image is produced by a colour wheel, which can lead to disturbing noises at high rotation speeds. This can result in unwanted colour effects.
LCD beamers resemble classic slide projectors. They are usually small, lightweight, and consume less power. Due to the sharp delineation of the pixels, texts and graphics can be read particularly well. Additionally, they are sensitive to dust and smoke. A disadvantage of these devices is that they cannot reproduce deep blacks and therefore are not as high in contrast.
LED beamers have higher energy efficiency. The LED lights have a much longer lifespan than conventional projector lamps. Additionally, less heat is generated, so less cooling is required. This allows the devices to be built more compactly. They are also quiet. There are compromises in light output, which is why such a projector / beamer is only suitable for darkened rooms.
Brightness, contrast, and resolution
When purchasing a beamer, consumers should pay attention to the brightness. This is specified in ANSI lumens and typically ranges from 900 to 5,000 lumens. The choice of strength depends on the size of the room, how far the device is from the screen, and whether it will be used in daylight. In general, the larger and brighter the room, the higher the lumen value should be. The contrast should also be high, as only then will the colours be displayed naturally and vividly. For resolution, it is advisable to choose a device that reproduces at least 1,280 x 720 pixels. However, there are now many on the market in Full HD quality, which are usually more expensive.
Connection options
As connection sources, the projector / beamer should offer DVI and VGA. This allows image signals to be transmitted from a PC or notebook. For transmitting high-resolution content, an HDMI output is essential.
Accessories
Numerous accessories are also available for a beamer / projector. First of all, screens can be purchased onto which the image is projected. Alternatively, there are also other specially coated surfaces suitable for display. Buyers can choose between fixed screens and retractable or rollable ones. The latter are especially suitable for limited space. The projector can be mounted on a wall or ceiling with specific brackets.
