Buy binoculars cheaply: Consumer tips

Zeiss Binoculars

In private settings, these devices are particularly interesting for nature enthusiasts, but also for sportspeople. With the help of a binocular or field glass, one can observe distant objects or animals and birds in all their details. Typically, the binocular devices are mostly handy and compact. However, not every model is suitable for every purpose. Find out in our guide why that is the case.

From opera glasses to modern prism binoculars

Before the 19th century, the opera glass was considered a magnification tool for visitors to operas and theatre performances. There were both monocular and binocular variants that reflected and inverted the image on stage according to the Kepler- telescope through the lens. An additional third collecting lens could then display the image the right way up again. Such opera glasses are still available today. However, due to their relatively low magnification, they have gradually made way for the more modern prism binoculars. In these glasses or field glasses, various prism systems take over the correct orientation of the magnified image.

Binoculars for sports and leisure

To observe animals in nature, one should choose binoculars with approximately tenfold magnification. If that is still not enough, one can opt for a twentyfold magnification. However, not only the magnification but also the exit pupil is an important feature when purchasing a field glass. This does not need to be larger than a few millimetres. One should also pay attention to comfort and handling. In addition to heavier and powerful devices from Zeiss, Nikon, or Bresser, one can also purchase very compact and foldable variants that weigh no more than 100 grams. This way, the binoculars do not become a burden during leisure use when they are used frequently.

Observe even better with zoom binoculars and image stabilisers

Some binoculars have an integrated zoom. This works similarly to a digital camera. This allows you to adjust the magnification individually. There are also other functions and features that modern binoculars offer. An image stabiliser compensates for slight to moderate shaking when you remain in one position for an extended period. High-quality lenses and eyepieces prevent unsightly imaging errors and make observing a true pleasure. If the binoculars are primarily used in the dark, optional lighting systems such as LEDs can be employed.

Set off for prolonged observations with telescopes and spotting scopes

Only a few binoculars are designed for more than 25x magnification. The reason for this lies in the construction. Larger lenses and prisms make the device heavier. Longer observations become uncomfortable and more prone to shaking. Instead, one should buy a telescope with a tripod. The spotting scope is a variant of these magnifying devices. Unlike conventional binoculars, it is not a true telescope but a telescope that presents images upright and without reflection. Spotting scopes weigh a maximum of two kilograms and are protected against shocks and water.

Tips for buying binoculars and spotting scopes

  • Consider not only the magnification factor but also the image quality at close range
  • The exit pupil should be on average two to three millimetres in size
  • Light binoculars are pleasant to use but can also shake more quickly
  • One or two dials for diopter adjustment make the devices usable for glasses wearers
