Storage media: Consumer tips
It's no wonder, as computers are used in almost every area of our lives today. Consequently, there is also an astonishingly wide range of accessories available for the numerous forms of computers. The storage medium, for example, can not only provide significant advantages to professional data backup companies: the average user can also derive great benefits from a small storage medium. However, when choosing, it is important to pay attention to some specifics. After all, the different types have very different properties. Learn more about the topic of storage media here!
Internal hard drives
Internal hard drives are part of the standard equipment of every computer. A storage medium generally offers a lot of space for storing the various programs and files accumulated during the use of a PC. Currently, 750 gigabytes to 1.5 terabytes are common storage sizes in this category. In some cases, however, the volumes can be significantly larger. There is also a general difference in access speed. The so-called SSD drives are particularly fast compared to the older HDD hard drives and are therefore also extremely efficient in data processing.
External hard drives
External storage forms use the same technology as internal hard drives. However, these models are powered by an additional power source. This can be either via the USB connection through PC power supply or through an additional power adapter. The latter variant is usually found in 3.5-inch drives, while the USB variant is found in 2.5-inch drives, where not only their casing size but also their volume can vary significantly. For example, there are already external hard drives up to five terabytes in the 3.5-inch category, while in the much more compact 2.5-inch category, many 250 to 500-gigabyte solutions are still available. In addition to size, the type of connection should also be considered: the new data transfer USB 3.0, for example, allows for about ten times faster file transfer than the classic 2.0 method.
USB drives and card solutions
Much more portable, but also less extensive, are USB drives. They are also referred to as USB sticks. Here, the upper limit is already at 128 gigabytes, but the compactness makes this form particularly attractive for people who want a very mobile and fast data exchange. Memory cards, on the other hand, are even more mobile. They currently hold a maximum of 64 gigabytes, but larger versions have already been announced. Memory cards are mainly used in smartphones, digital cameras or tablet PCs.
CDs & Co.
The last group in the storage medium category consists of all disc solutions: CDs, DVDs, CD-RWs, and mini-discs represent a particularly mobile group in the storage media segment. However, this category also offers the least storage space in comparison. Additionally, this form can only be written to once.
Overview of storage media
- Internal hard drives (offer a lot of space)
- Fast SSD volumes (are very quick, but somewhat smaller)
- External hard drives with 3.5 inches and 2.5 inches
- USB drives with up to 128 gigabytes (particularly mobile)
- Memory cards with up to 64 gigabytes (for mobile devices)
- CDs, DVDs, mini-discs
