Analogue Phones

The conventional, but outdated analogue technology with the tried-and-tested a/b connection will then be obsolete.

But does this also apply to analogue phones? Not at all, they are experiencing a renaissance, as they are mature, unbeatable in price, and can be conveniently operated via modern routers at IP connections or even wirelessly controlled via integrated DECT stations. By the way, due to this DECT technology, the phones are no longer truly analogue – but that is just a minor detail for the user.

Phones (Analogue) are therefore well-equipped for the future. But what should be considered when purchasing? Here are some tips:

Cordless or desk phone?

This is less a question of price and more dependent on individual phone habits. If you always sit in the same place while talking on the phone or prefer to communicate via headset, a desk phone is advisable. In all other cases, a cordless phone is recommended, and there is a huge selection available today in terms of design and functions. As the majority nowadays opts for the cordless variant, the following tips will only refer to these devices.

Wasn't there something about radiation when using cordless phones? Yes, all cordless phones emit a certain amount of radiation. Therefore, when purchasing, one should look for low-radiation devices (e.g. with ECO mode, in which the radiation in the charging station is reduced to zero) as well as features that allow the reception power to be adjusted: If you are usually near the transmitter, lower power is sufficient, resulting in less radiation and power consumption. The range for phones is typically up to 300 metres outdoors and 50 metres indoors – but can also be extended with so-called repeaters (boosters). So, if the transmitter is in the basement, the entire house can still be supplied with the phone signal.

Additional features

Cheap analogue phones are available from 10 pounds. But are they only suitable for making calls? The extras can be expensive – here is a corresponding selection:

• Answering machine (already integrated with Telekom's IP connections)

• Senior-friendly features (large buttons, emergency button)

• Volume control
• Wireless communication via Bluetooth (for pairing with mobile phone or headset)
• SMS function
• Calendar or alarm clock
• Baby monitor
• Customisable (for example, with personal tones or display images)

Almost all the beloved extras found in smartphones are also available for analogue landline phones. However, one should first specifically question which functions are truly needed and then select the desired device accordingly.
