Dog lead: Consumer tips
Dog leads come in various types, which can be selected according to need. Standard leads have a fixed length of usually 1.2 to 2 metres and are suitable for everyday use in busy environments, where you want or need to keep the dog close to you. Retractable leads, also known as flexi leads, have a spring mechanism that automatically rolls the lead in and out, allowing for a variable length. They provide the dog with more freedom of movement but also require more attention from the owner, and handling them takes some practice. Long leads with lengths of 5 to 20 metres are mainly used for recall training or for controlled off-lead periods.
How sturdy should a lead be?
The width and strength of the lead are adjusted to the size and strength of the dog. For small dogs, narrower leads with a width of 1-1.5 cm are sufficient. For medium-sized dogs, leads with a width of 1.5-2 cm are recommended. Large and strong dogs require wider leads with 2-3 cm, which provide more stability and control and also distribute the pressure on the owner's hand better. To ensure that the lead does not tear or stretch excessively under sudden strain, it is advisable to choose a quality product from the market.
Sturdy carabiners and connectors provide additional safety for the lead. High-quality carabiners are made of stainless steel or chrome-plated metal and feature a reliable locking mechanism that prevents accidental opening while still being easy to handle. The carabiner must be able to rotate freely; otherwise, the lead can quickly become twisted. For particularly strong dogs, safety carabiners with additional locking mechanisms are also sensible for more control.
Functional leads and additional features
Functional leads are designed for specific purposes or problems. Double leads allow for the simultaneous handling of two dogs, while coupling leads can connect two dogs without direct contact with the owner. Training leads with multiple handle loops offer various handling positions and allow for quick adjustment of the lead length. For joggers or cyclists, there are hip leads that are worn around the waist, leaving the hands free.
The special features of dog leads include reflective elements or integrated LED lighting for better visibility in the dark, shock-absorbing elements that cushion sudden pulling forces, or integrated pockets for waste bags or treats. Some models have an additional handle near the carabiner, allowing for closer control in critical situations.
Material
Nylon leads are very robust, easy to care for (dry quickly when wet), and available in numerous colours and patterns. They are well-suited for everyday use and are easy to clean even after contact with water or dirt. Leather leads are elegant, durable, and have a pleasant feel. Over time, they become softer and more supple with use but also require some care to maintain their properties. Leads made from biothane, a plastic-coated fabric that combines the robustness of nylon with the grip of leather and is particularly weather-resistant, are a good alternative that combines the positive properties of leather and plastic.
