Gamepads Consumer Tips?
The gamepad is held with both hands and, in its simplest form, has a directional pad on the left side and a series of action buttons on the right side. A directional pad consists of four digital buttons arranged in a cross shape. Typically, the directional pad is used for directional inputs. The action buttons vary from game to game (for example, jumping, running, shooting, etc.). Gamepads are mainly used in sports and action games, as these are usually unsuitable for keyboard and mouse.
What functions does a gamepad have?
To optimally control current games, the gamepad should have at least ten buttons. Four buttons should be on the top (also called shoulder buttons), which can be operated with the index fingers. Another four buttons should be located on the right side of the gamepad, which are pressed with the right thumb. The other two buttons in the middle are used to pause the game or access the options menu. Additionally, gamepads typically feature analogue joysticks. Unlike digital directional pads, they provide continuous control commands in all directions. Instead of shoulder buttons on the top, so-called triggers can also be used. They are controlled by the index fingers, and the pad registers how far the trigger is pressed. This is particularly suitable for racing games, as it allows for the regulation of acceleration and braking. Today's gamepads, in contrast to their predecessors, are designed for ergonomics and fit. They should feel good and solid in the hand and not feel flimsy. More flexibility and comfort are offered by wireless models. Here, control signals are transmitted via radio. Since these devices are powered by a battery or rechargeable battery, they are also heavier than other gamepads and, in addition, more expensive. Most now also feature a rumble function. It generates vibrations that correspond to the game action. However, this function is not supported by all games.
What should you consider when buying?
The range of gamepads is large, but not every device is suitable for your purpose. The number of buttons can significantly narrow down the options. As mentioned earlier, the gamepad should have at least ten buttons to enjoy current games without issues. The build quality is also a central criterion when purchasing, as the device is mechanically stressed in the player's hand and thus exposed to high loads. Ideally, you should test the device before buying to see how it feels in your hand. What additional functions are needed in a gamepad depends on the user and which games are to be controlled. Nowadays, all gamepads have a USB connection, but older models were connected to a game port, which modern PCs no longer have.
