QLED technology

QLED stands for "Quantum Dot LED" and is a technology from Samsung. Essentially, it is an LED television with an LCD display, where an additional layer of so-called Quantum Dots is embedded in the panel. These tiny nanocrystals have the ability to emit light of different wavelengths, resulting in brighter colours and higher brightness. Unlike OLED TVs, which illuminate each pixel individually, QLED TVs are backlit. This backlighting allows QLED TVs to achieve extremely high peak brightness, making them ideal for bright rooms and HDR content.

QLED vs OLED and LED

When distinguishing between QLED, OLED, and LED TVs, it is about how the television image is illuminated. QLED and LED TVs use different backlighting technologies, while OLED TVs do not require backlighting as their pixels emit light themselves. The result is that OLED TVs still deliver the best black levels, as they can completely turn off pixels. On the other hand, QLED TVs can deliver brighter images thanks to their backlighting, which is particularly advantageous in bright rooms. While LED televisions are mainly affordable and energy-efficient, QLED offers superior colour and contrast performance. OLED TVs excel with deeper black levels and better viewing angle stability. QLED TVs do not suffer from the so-called burn-in effect, where static images displayed for long periods can become permanently etched. Advantages of QLED TV:

Disadvantages of QLED TV:

• Black representation: Although QLEDs can display bright images well, they struggle to produce deep blacks, especially compared to OLED televisions, which can turn off individual pixels to achieve perfect black.
• Viewing angle: QLED televisions tend to distort colours and contrasts when viewed from steep angles.
