OLED TVs: Consumer tips
OLED TVs deliver exceptionally high picture quality with their deep blacks and lifelike colours. The following explains what to consider when purchasing an OLED TV and the advantages that OLED technology offers.
OLED Technology
OLED technology (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) represents a revolution in display technology. Unlike traditional LED TVs, OLED TVs do not require a backlight, as each individual pixel generates its own light. The result is unparalleled black levels, as turned-off pixels are truly black. Furthermore, OLED technology allows for the display of over a billion colours, leading to high-contrast and lifelike colours on the screen. The response times of OLED TVs are very short and nearly instantaneous, making them ideal for fast movements in sports broadcasts or video games. Motion blur is minimised, and a clearer, sharper image is displayed. With an OLED TV, the picture quality remains intact even when viewed from the side due to the wide viewing angle. Since OLEDs do not require a separate backlight, they can be constructed thinner and lighter than LED TVs. Despite all the advantages, OLED TVs are also known for the "burn-in" or "image retention" effect, where static images can be "burned in" on the screen over an extended period. However, this effect is likely to occur only in rare cases. Nevertheless, manufacturers have addressed the issue and developed various technologies to minimise the burn-in effect.
HDR and Dolby Atmos
Crucial for the quality and sharpness of the image, alongside 4K resolution, is the type of image optimisation. In addition to SDR, support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) has now become standard in good televisions. The HDR function provides an even more realistic representation of films and games through increased contrast and colour spectrum. An OLED TV should therefore be equipped with HDR10 or, even better, HDR10+. HDR10+ promises a greater brightness range combined with improved representation of dark scenes. Dolby Atmos and built-in multi-channel speakers provide the three-dimensional sound and immersive audio experience. For true cinema feeling and Hollywood sound, a soundbar is also recommended.
Smart TV Features
OLED TVs not only offer impressive picture quality but also come with a range of smart features. The internet connection allows access to a variety of streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+, as well as access to an app store for downloading additional apps. Through the connection with other devices, such as tablets or smartphones, content can be easily transferred to the TV. Generally, OLED TVs are compatible with voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
