In the V-brake system, two brake pads mechanically press against the brake tracks of the rim. The brake lever on the handlebar transmits the force via a brake cable to the actual brake.
- Hydraulic rim brakes function fundamentally very similarly to conventional rim brakes. The cable pull system with brake cable is replaced here by an oil-filled hydraulic line. This results in improved controllability and strength of the braking performance.
- Hydraulic disc brakes offer the best braking power with optimal controllability. Wear is low, and the rim flanks are not affected, as with conventional rim brakes. The disadvantage is that they tend to squeak in wet conditions, and maintenance usually can only be performed by a bicycle workshop.
