Which steam cooker to buy? - Consumer tips
In principle, the preparation of food takes slightly longer than conventional cooking. Therefore, there is no time saving associated with the classic steam cooker. The energy consumption is slightly higher than that of a microwave. For those who have reservations about a microwave due to radiation exposure, a steam cooker is ideal, as it can also thaw or heat food and sterilise baby bottles. Overall, steaming is considered the healthiest cooking method worldwide. The food does not sit in water but is evenly enveloped by steam. This way, valuable water-soluble vitamins and minerals are preserved, vegetables remain tender and crisp, poultry stays juicy, and fish does not fall apart. Furthermore, nothing dries out in steam, nothing burns, the colour of vegetables is even enhanced, and the dishes retain their intense natural flavour. Therefore, fat and salt can be used very sparingly in steamed dishes. There is no transfer of flavours in steam, allowing different foods like fish, vegetables, and potatoes to be prepared simultaneously. With easy operation and without effort, entire menus can be prepared. Steaming is suitable for everything that does not need to be seared or crispy.
What differences are there?
In general, one distinguishes between small appliances that can be stored away afterwards, large appliances with steam cooking functions either as standalone or built-in devices, and combination devices with microwave, hot air, or grill. It is important not to confuse steam cookers with steam ovens, which work with steam and hot air but do not include a steam cooking function. Electronic steam cookers usually have up to three levels on which different ingredients can be prepared simultaneously. Depending on the duration, the foods are placed in the bowls one after the other and cooked. In combination devices, one can also brown and bake with hot air and grill. However, steam is used very sparingly in this case. However, the hot air in these combination devices can save some time.
What should you pay attention to when buying?
Prefer devices that do not require a permanently installed water supply and drainage. Important features include an external water refill option and a water level indicator. The device should be stable overall, the material robust, and the power consumption low. A high wattage reduces cooking times but increases power consumption. Especially large devices also consume power in standby mode. The individual bowls should fit precisely on top of each other and ideally be dishwasher safe. A continuously adjustable timer and an acoustic signal at the end of the cooking time are practical.
