Hair dryers: Consumer tips
Commercial hair dryers are equipped with a DC motor designed for daily use of about ten minutes. With a digital motor and intelligent heat regulation, Dyson has made waves in the industry.
What should be considered?
With more frequent use, hair dryers can overload and break more quickly. Models with AC motors are more powerful and durable, achieving higher performance in terms of airflow and lifespan. The hair dryer should not be too heavy, and the motor's centre of gravity should not pull it backwards. The outgoing heat should be adjustable through various temperature settings. The cool setting, which reaches minimal room temperature, is intended to protect the hair and provide a better styling result. A hair dryer from Dyson's Supersonic series measures the air temperature 40 times per second and adjusts the temperature of the airflow accordingly to avoid heat damage to delicate hair. Most hair dryers have an over-temperature protection feature, preventing the device from overheating when a certain maximum temperature is exceeded. To prevent the hair dryer from slipping out of hand, it is helpful if the handle is rubberised or has a special coating. Some handles also have an ergonomic shape. To make the device easier to clean, the air intake grille should be removable. An ion hair dryer generates negative ions through high voltage, which neutralise the positive electrostatic charge of the hair, allowing it to dry faster and more gently. Additionally, this gives the hair more shine. There are various attachments, such as a diffuser for easier shaping of natural curls or for drying a perm, and a styling nozzle that concentrates the airflow on a point, making it easier to work on individual sections of hair.
Curling iron and curlers
With a curling iron, individual strands of hair are wrapped around the rod one by one and held in place for a while during heating. The larger the curling iron, the wavier and less defined the hair will be. If you prefer small corkscrew curls rather than loose waves, you should opt for a smaller rod. It is important that it has heat control, as hair requires different temperatures depending on its strength and condition. The rod should be made of ceramic or tourmaline. Another way to transform straight hair into beautiful curls is with curlers. There are models specifically designed to be worn overnight. A practical alternative is electric or thermal curlers, which are heated. Once they reach the right temperature, the hair can be wrapped around them.
Straighteners
The housing should be robust, and the plates should close evenly without excessive force when pressed together. The longer and thicker the hair, the larger the straightener should be. A 360-degree swivel cord at the back of the device is recommended to avoid tangling and to allow the device to be used as a curling iron if needed. Since frequent straightening puts stress on the hair, it is important that the device has multiple temperature settings so that the hair is not constantly treated at maximum temperature. A light indicating when the straightener is sufficiently heated and an automatic shut-off feature are also recommended. In addition to the plates that serve to actually straighten the hair, there are also wave tongs, known as crimpers, as an attachment. These are used to crimp the hair and are available with both large and small ridges.
