How does the power supply work in a notebook?
The power adapter must supply individual hardware components with power and transform the 230 volts from the socket to provide, for example, a voltage of 17 to 22 volts, so that the charging process of a 15-volt battery can be managed gently and precisely. With a power adapter, notebooks can theoretically be in operation all the time.
This is different with a battery. Almost all notebooks today operate with a lithium-ion battery. These have the advantage of being lightweight, quick to charge, and maintenance-free. They also have a high capacity. Their lifespan is measured in charge cycles. A charge cycle is a complete discharge and a complete recharge. Realistically, there are about 300 to 500 charge cycles. Notebooks are designed to be energy-efficient, so the battery life usually lasts a few hours. The typical runtime is between half an hour and eight hours. Nowadays, it is possible with most models to replace the battery or optionally equip it with a second battery to extend the runtime. However, this is only worthwhile if it is used regularly, as an unused battery can quickly become unusable.
What should be considered abroad?
In the UK, mains electricity is 230 V, but UK plugs are different from those used in other countries. When travelling outside the UK, you may need both a plug adapter and, in some countries, a voltage converter if your charger is not compatible with the local supply. Many modern chargers support a wide input range, but this should always be checked before use. Universal travel adapters are often the most convenient solution, and charging in the car is possible with a suitable 12 V charger.
What should be considered when purchasing?
When buying a power adapter, it is essential to pay attention to how much power it needs to provide. The power of the adapter is important for adequate power supply. Furthermore, there are no standard power adapters. The adapter must always be suitable for the specific type of battery; otherwise, it can lead to battery destruction or burns due to excessive heating. They can be purchased directly from the manufacturer or in specialty stores if one does not know which adapter is needed.
Universal power adapters are somewhat cheaper than regular ones, but they are not suitable for every notebook. There are also DIY power adapters that are very inexpensive but are usually too weak in power. More powerful DIY power adapters, on the other hand, are quite expensive and fairly large. Batteries are also custom-made, and ideally, they should last at least three hours, although power consumption also heavily depends on the device's usage. When purchasing a second battery, the runtime can be more than doubled if the battery is identical to the first one. Additionally, batteries age and lose capacity, so it is advisable to avoid purchasing an older model.
