Buy stepper cheaply: Consumer tips

Stepper test

Additionally, the tendons in the foot area and the circulation can be strengthened. A stepper mainly achieves a mix of strength and endurance training for the thighs. However, pure endurance training with such a device is not recommended in the long term, as it can lead to disc problems. A stepper is also not suitable for people with knee issues.

What different devices are available?

There is a wide range of steppers for home use. You can choose between mechanical and electronic versions, as well as devices with eddy current brakes or with a hydraulic cylinder braking system. Very simple steppers, known as step boards, are not even mechanical. They are practically just simple elevations used for stepping up. Luxury variants, on the other hand, even come with a computer that displays step count, steps per minute, training time, and calorie consumption. Hydraulic cylinders are found in most cheaper, mechanical models. In these, the resistance is regulated via a rotary knob. Good steppers are equipped with an eddy current brake. In this system, the flywheel is braked by an electric magnetic field. This facilitates precise calibration via an integrated measuring station and ensures better running of the stepper. With such models, pulse-controlled training is usually possible. The classic, simple, mechanical steppers are referred to as mini steppers. There are also steppers with pull ropes. These have the advantage of involving the upper body in the workout. So-called twist and swing steppers or side steppers can swing to the side and are said to guarantee an even more effective workout for the legs, hips, and buttocks. Additionally, models with arm bars are offered, which are safer and should be healthier in the long run, as they make it easier to maintain an upright posture during training.

What should be considered when buying a stepper?

It is particularly important to pay attention to an adjustable resistance when choosing a stepper. The step resistance must be maintained consistently. Additionally, larger steppers, ideally with arm supports, are preferable to smaller variants, provided there is enough space for them. Steppers must be well-made and stable. A good quality indicator is the well-known GS, CE, and TÜV certification marks. Furthermore, a sufficiently large foot area is essential. On a stepper, it should be possible to take large steps, and the pedals should also be non-slip. The LCD computer display of a stepper is best designed to be clear and equipped with basic functions. Integrated heart rate measurement is best done via telemetry heart rate display, as pulse measurement via ear clip or hand pulse measurement is both inaccurate and impractical during training. More comprehensive steppers are advantageous if they also have pre-installed training programmes. However, with variants that have hydraulic cylinders, it is important that they are as load-bearing as possible.
