Buy rowing machines cheaply: Consumer tips
Nevertheless, they are suitable for various training purposes: In particular, strength and endurance training can be effectively achieved with them. Additionally, a rowing machine can be used for cardio training. Training on rowing machines also results in a high calorie burn and stimulates fat metabolism. Another advantage of the machines is that they train the entire body. Shoulder, back, arm, and leg muscles are equally engaged. You sit on a seat to train and pull on rowing ropes or bars, mimicking a rowing motion. There are two different systems involved. On one hand, there is the so-called outrigger system, where a separate rowing handle is mounted for each hand. With such a rowing machine, three-dimensional training is possible, and the movement sequence is directly adapted from rowing boats. On the other hand, there are also rowing machines that have only one cable pull for both hands. These have the advantage that coordination is easier to maintain. Most rowing machines also offer computers that display, for example, the total number of strokes, strokes per minute, as well as time and pulse. A heart rate monitor is usually included as well.
What different braking systems are there?
Rowing machines are equipped with different braking systems. The most common systems are those with hydraulic cylinders, where resistance is generated by counterpressure during the forward and backward movement. Hydraulic cylinders can usually be adjusted, but achieving a consistent setting of the two cylinders is difficult. Additionally, hydraulic cylinders have a limited lifespan and cannot ensure a smooth movement at the reversal point. In magnetic brake systems or eddy current brakes, the flywheel is driven by the pull handle of the rowing machine. The brakes consist of magnets, and in eddy current brakes, special electromagnets are used. These braking systems ensure a smooth rowing motion, but the flywheel should be large enough. Air resistance systems, on the other hand, generate resistance through an air wheel that continues to rotate due to movement on the device. They mimic the rowing motion very well. However, the best simulation is achieved by devices with water wheel operation. In these, water-filled containers with rotating paddles are used as a braking system. Their resistance can be regulated by changing the water level.
What should you consider when buying a rowing machine?
When selecting a rowing machine, attention should be paid to a ball-bearing sliding seat that is comfortable and as low-friction as possible. A stable and robust frame is also essential. It must be stable and have a high-quality finish. Additionally, certification with a TÜV, GS, or CE mark is a reliable quality indicator. It is important that the rowing machine is adjustable to personal body measurements and offers further adjustment options such as resistance. The range of motion of the rowing machine must be sufficient for one's own height. Rowing machines with cable pulls are preferred over those with bars. Furthermore, attention should be paid to a non-slip footplate and foot straps that guarantee a good grip. The integrated computer should have the basic functions mentioned above and be easy to operate. Another quality indicator for rowing machines is minimal noise development. The heart rate monitor is better not to be an ear clip, as these variants can hinder during training. For safety, good rowing machines have all moving parts covered, so nothing can get caught in them. For spaces with limited room, foldable models are recommended.
