It usually represents the connection to the internet, which is not possible without a modem.
The word modem is derived from the words modulation and demodulation. A modem converts digital data into a form suitable for analogue lines. This process is called modulation. On the receiving side, this data is digitised again. This process is called demodulation. This is necessary because computers can only communicate digitally, while normal telephone lines can only process analogue signals.
Modems can be used either as an external device or internally in the computer. An internal modem is only worthwhile if the PC is to be the only one connected to the internet in the long term. Additionally, most can also be used as a fax machine. Modems come in various performance classes, which differ in transmission rates.
