Buy hands-free systems cheaply: Consumer tips
There are various types of hands-free devices, one type of which is the headset, which is worn directly on the head and features an earpiece as well as a microphone. Headsets are connected to the mobile phone either via Bluetooth or cable. Other hands-free devices, on the other hand, are mounted directly in the car's cockpit. They are classified into 'plug and play' solutions and fixed installations. 'Plug and play' solutions are connected to the cigarette lighter, whereas fixed installations are permanently installed and therefore cannot be used in other vehicles. When the mobile phone is connected to a fixed installation, it often allows control via the steering wheel, which has certain buttons integrated for operation. Additionally, the sound of the radio is often muted during incoming calls. While 'plug and play' solutions are controlled via the mobile phone, fixed hands-free devices certainly have the advantage of high comfort and easy operation through controls on the steering wheel or cockpit. In general, however, hands-free devices do not prevent the passenger from overhearing the conversation (unlike the special form of the headset).
