The writer Michael Arthate goes out into the countryside, far in front of the town of Rothbury in England, to work on his second horror novel. An old Victorian manor house is supposed to offer him the desired seclusion and peace. Apparently, Mr. James T. Blackwood also had peace when he killed his wife in this very house in the mid-60s. However, before he could be brought to trial, he died of heart failure. The heir of the house, a respected doctor and family friend, lived in the Blackwood family estate for eleven years until he disappeared without a trace.
